- Members’ Meeting
- The club’s directors would like to ask any members who can to attend a members’ meeting on Sunday June 19th, after the last round of the June Swiss (around 8 or 9 pm). We will discuss the club’s plans for the future.
- HB Global Chess Challenge
- The HB Global Chess Challenge took place May 18th-22nd in lovely Minneapolis, MN. EBCC directors David Pruess and Andy Lee took part, with director Bhat having to forego the event due to final exams. The club was well represented, with members playing in every section. Pruess and Lee each scored 5.5/9 in the Open, losing tough games to GMs Kamsky, and Christiansen and Gurevich, respectively. These games can be found in the games section of this newsletter. Larry Snyder finished with 5.5/9 in the U2200 section, Kayven Riese scored 2.5/6 in the U2000, Rico Adkins got 4/8 in the U1800, Sreekar Jasthi got 5.5/9, Vijay Jasthi got 4.5/9, Jason Cruz got 4.5/9, and John Steele got 4/8, all in the U1600, and Mohamed Sayed got 5/9 in the U1400.
- The tournament drew 1514 players, a lower turnout than had been hoped for by the organizers, but still a record for an open tournament in the U.S. Hopefully the HB Foundation will sponsor the event in the future and more players will attend.
- EBCC Open and Scholastic Quads
- The EBCC held a pair of quads May 14th and 15th. There were two sections to the scholastic quads on Saturday. In the top section, Jerome Sun fought his way through a strong field for a perfect 3-0 mark. In the other section, with 7 players, two reached 2.5-0.5 to tie for first: Tiger Shen and Edward Neumann, each notching their first tournament victory! They drew a game, which went down to bare kings, against each other in the last round.
- The Open Quads had 12 players in 3 quads. The top quad was won by Martin Marshall, with a perfect 3-0 score. In the second quad, there was a tie for first between Antonio Salles and Von Motschenbacher with two wins apiece. The third quad was extremely tight (no one scored more than 2 or less than 1!), and was won outright by Carl Woebcke at 2.
- Monday Night Marathon
- In the seventh Monday Night Marathon, Craig Andries leads with 2.5/3 at the halfway mark. There will be a short mini-Marathon between June 27th and July 18th, followed by a longer one starting July 25th, for which we have placed a tournament life announcement in Chess Life to boost attendance. Those not playing the whole tournament can still drop in for a rated game on Monday nights, as long as they notify us by 6:30 of their intention to play, so they can be put in that day’s pairings.
