(Back to recent news)
- Sharing with Archway School
- Beginning this fall, Archway School will be moving into the building as our co-tenant.
- New Event: Thursday Night Blitz tournaments.
- The club will be making an effort in July to get a new part of the schedule up and running, the Thursday night blitz tournament. We will start by running three of them July 14, 21, and 28, to see how they fare. They will start each week at 8 PM, with free entry to club members and the usual $5 club drop-in fee for non-members. However, on July 28, to make things different, we will have the July Blitz Championship with a moderate entry fee to generate a prize pool (100% will go towards the prizes).
- New Event: Monthly Action Championship
- The Wednesday Night action tournaments have been going every week steadily for a long time now, with the most recent attendance of 9 players (!) on June 29th. To add a little spice and maybe attract a few different players, we will experiment with holding a monthly action championship, the last Wednesday of each month, with an entry fee and prizes (100% of entries will go to the prizes). Please help spread the word of our new events!
- Another GM event comes to Berkeley
- The club will be hosting a second GM-norm round robin this summer, taking place between July 27 and August 4. It is planned as a 10-player, single round-robin, with one game a day.
- East Bay Chess Club’s Inaugural Summer Chess Camps
- The EBCC is happy to present its first summer chess camp for scholastic chess players. The week long camps, which run four hours daily, are taught by two of the finest instructors and players in Northern California: Senior Master David Pruess and National Master Andy Lee. The camps will be offered from August 8-12 and August 15-19. Check out the website (http://www.eastbaychess.com) or gives us a call at (510) 845-1041 for more info and to reserve a spot!
- Bayareasliga: Round 4
- Round 4 of the Bayareasliga saw a really fun and exciting 2-2 match between “El Paso Tal” and the “Oakland Maters”. All four games were lively affairs, and each team came out with two wins.
- The match between the league leading UC Berkeley squad and the Berkeley Chess School was delayed because UC Berkeley was unable to field a team with many gone for summer vacation. Berkeley Chess School’s captain was interested in sporting not forfeiting, and is looking into possibilities for playing the match at a later date.
- Meanwhile the 2nd-place team, “David, Andy, and their Merciless Minions” racked up 3.5/4, thanks in part due to a pair of unfortunate forfeit wins, which may or may not be enough to allow them to catch up with UC Berkeley, going into their last round match-up against each other.
- Monday Night Mini-Marathon
- The club’s 8th Monday Night Marathon is underway, a four-rounder with rounds June 27, July 11, 18, and 25. The first round had many strong players, including NMs Andy Lee and Kimani Stancil, and some very competitive games and a couple upsets, with Brian McCandless and Ken White taking out class-A players. It is of course still possible to enter the event with a first round bye, or to play on any given day a single round (just notify us no later than 6:30 PM the day of the round to be paired).
- June Swiss
- The June Swiss was the best attended and strongest event in the East Bay Chess Club’s history, with a strong 20 player Open section lead by IM Ganbold Odondoo. He was taken out of the prize running early, however, by local A-player Paul Ganem in under 30 moves! This opened the field for experts Batsaikhan Tserendorj (who finished tied for second with Odondoo and Philipp Perelpelitsky) and eventual tournament winner Kenneth Hills, who beat rising star Sam Shankland in the final round to finish in clear first with 3.5/4.
- The U-1750 section had only ten players, but they made up for the smaller section with fighting play, as no player was able to score more than 3 out of 4 points. Tobias Neisser, Carl Woebcke, and Ted Belanoff tied for first with this score, after Neisser beat Belanoff in round two, Woebcke beat Neisser in round three, and Belanoff beat Woebcke in the final round to even out the standings!
- June Scholastic Swiss
- The EBCC also held another large two-day scholastic tournament in June. Although this event did not draw the 50 players of the March tournament, 30 players showed up to compete for 20 trophies and 5 free lessons. The eventual winners were Ted Belanoff and Saveen Sahni with 5/6 in the K-12 section, and Abie Brauner, Rohan Desikan, Jerome Sun, and Hemang Jangle, all with 4/5 in the K-3 section.
