- East Bay Chess Club honored as Chess Club of the Year
- The USCF named the East Bay Chess Club and the Mechanics Institute as co-clubs of the year for the U.S. Although the club has only been open for a year, it has run a great number of events of a great variety, and hopefully deserves this recognition. Thanks to our members for making this possible!
- Club Re-opens, sharing space with Archway School
- The club re-opened on Wednesday, September 7th. The weekday schedule is exactly the same as it had been in the past, with the exception that we now open at 3:30 rather than 3:00. The club is now sharing its space with the Archway School. This will be good for the financial future of the club. It does however mean that we now have a responsibility to make sure that the space is in good shape every day for the school’s students. We need to be good about keeping the place clean, and not touching items belonging to the school. Please help us make this arrangement work out. Thanks!
- Purcell wins Monday Marathon #8; Marathon #9 starts tomorrow
- Brendan Purcell won the 8th Monday Night Marathon by winning the last round game with co-leader Brian McCandless. He finished with a score of 3.4/5. Under-1700 honors were won by Nick Gauger thanks to his last round upset of Craig Andries.
- Yermolinsky takes CalChess State Championship
- Grandmaster Alex Yermolinsky tore through the field at the CalChess State Championship with a 5.5/6 score, defeating SM Pruess and IM DeGuzman along the way and drawing with SM Zilberstein along the way. Zilberstein and DeGuzman took second with 4.5/6.
- US Chess League begins
- A new chess league, with teams representing 8 major metropolitan areas was kicked off two weeks ago. The SF Bay Area has a team, the Mechanics, which includes two of the East Bay Chess Club’s directors, David Pruess and Andy Lee. The games can be viewed live on the Internet Chess Club (ICC) every Wednesday evening at 5:30 PM. One of Andy Lee’s games from this previous match against Dallas will be featured in this newsletter. For more info, take a look at http://www.uschessleague.com.
- September Scholastic Quads
- Scholastic quads were held on September 10th, attracting 14 players. The players were quite strong for a scholastic tournament, with more than half rated over 1000. The top two quads had very tight games, with no player emerging without a loss. Saveen Sahni and Jerome Sun tied for first with 2/3 in the top quad. Nikita Shenkman and Vishank Jain-Sharma tied for first with 2/3 in the second quad. The third section, paired as a 6 player swiss tournament saw Pranav Gopal take an untouched first place with 3/3, while Niraj Punjya managed sole second with 2/3.
- Bayareasliga – Call for Players
- The second season of the Bayareasliga is in the offing, and if you are interested in playing chess on a team, now is the time to let us know you are interested. Matches are monthly, and the season should go 8 months. Teams have rosters of up to 8 players, 4 of whom play in any given match. The first few match dates will be October 22nd, November 20th, and December 17th. You can organize a team with your friends, or ask to be placed on a list of interested players maintained by the league commissioner, to be placed on teams that need additional players. Email us at liga@eastbaychess.com if interested.
- Monthly Swisses at EBCC
- The EBCC will continue to run monthly swiss system tournaments at slow time controls. The next one will be September 24-25, NOT 17-18 as it says in Chess Life (the dates were changed in order to avoid a conflict with another Northern California tournament). Entries to these (and other) EBCC tournaments will be limited to 40 players because of our new space arrangement. An exception will be the Thanksgiving Swiss. With that tournament we will seek to establish another big yearly event on the Northern California tournament calendar. We will have the gym and capacity for 150 players. Plan for this tournament now, and please tell your friends about it!
