  • Scholastic Quads

    • 16 registered for EBCC’s scholastic quads on September 12: a perfect four quads. Unfortunately, it was not to be perfect, as one player did not show up at the tournament, leaving one quad with 3 players, and one less game. In the second, third, and fourth quads a convincing winner emerged: Yuki Siegrist, Mason Eastman, and Alex Zinoman each won all their games en route to their quad win. It should be noted additionally that this was Alex’s first tournament: quite a way to start! The top quad was more tightly fought, with no player escaping defeat. The winner was in fact defeated by the last place finisher. Tournament director Andy Lee picked out one of the games from this quad as a very interesting fight. It is presented in the Instructional section of this newsletter. The next scholastic quads at the EBCC will be held October 2nd and November 14th.
  • September Swiss

    • The club hosted its first USCF rated slow weekend tournament, drawing a reasonable attendance of 18 players. Good chess was played, given the slow time control. In the end, top seed, Senior Master David Pruess, emerged first at 3.5, nicked only by a bye. Taking sole second was Cal grad student Salar Jahedi, also nicked by a bye. The other half point dropped by Salar was a fine draw with National Master Andy Lee (the ending from Jahedi-Lee can be seen in the game section). Many other players could be quite happy with their result as they fought their way into a large tie for third at 2.5. The lowest rateds to do so were Tatsuro Yamamura, Bleys Rose, George Matchen, and Corey Chang. All currently rated below 1600, the first three defeated higher rated opponents in the course of the tourney. Corey’s last day was impressive as well: he drew with Ogush (1892) and expert Mazzarelli.
  • Wed Night Action #1

    • The first Wednesday Night Action event at the East Bay Chess Club had a tremendous upset winner, Carl Woebcke. In the first round, Mr. Woebcke had a great advantage against Craig Andries, but could only manage to draw because he ran out of time. Perhaps sparked by another won game that got away, Mr. Woebcke then made sure to win his last two games, reeling off consecutive miniatures, to take first at 2.5/3. Craig Andries took 2nd at 2/3, thanks to a solid last round draw with top seed NM Andy Lee. The event is now scheduled for 3 rounds, starting at 7:30 pm each Wednesday night, expanding to four rounds once attendance warrants it. Registration is possible until 7:15. The games are rated at ½ k, and ½ point byes are available for any rounds. Event is free to members.
  • Wednesday Night Action #2

    • NM Andy Lee had a strong event winning his first two games before an odd number of players caused him to step out of the third round (EBCC Directors generally sit out if there is going to be an odd number of players with them, so that everyone can get a game). He finished alone in first at 2.5-.5. Achieving a second place tie at 2-1 with a last round win against the other perfect score, Craig Andries, was Steven Svoboda in his first EBCC event.
